Sea Ice Concentration

Sea-ice concentration and time information for each swath from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) of the Global Change Observation Mission 1-Water "SHIZUKU" (GCOM-W1) of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA.

Operational Ice Maps

Our Operational Ice Maps product is a combination of radar, optical and sea ice concentration data, plotted with the appropriate landmasks and output in an image format for easy viewing on any device. Separate image files are delivered for each type of satellite imagery.

Radar Images

Radar images are produced by combining the output of one or more Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scenes from the Sentinel-1 satellites and extracting the data for the desired region of interest. Image data is delivered as GeoTIFF, an image format that includes geographical information and can thus be used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software packages.

Optical Images

The optical data product that we deliver is based upon the MODIS Terra Corrected Reflectance (True Color) optical satellite data kindly made available by the NASA. The relevant data is extracted for the desired region of interest and delivered as GeoTIFF, an image format that includes geographical information and can thus be used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software packages.

Twice daily

The most current image delivered every 12 hours. The exact delivery time can be specified below.

The most current image delivered every 24 hours. The exact delivery time can be specified below.

Near real-time (experienced user)

As soon as possible after aquisition of the satellite data. Depending upon location, orbit coverage can be up to 8 times per day.

Note that the image update rate can increase significantly depending upon the Region of Interest settings, and the Orbit Coverage (compare with image). If Region of Interest is set to a very large area (more than 2000 km) or to Entire Polar Region, we strongly recommend to limit the update rates to Twice daily/Daily or change the delivery method to FTP access.

Delivery Frequency

Our sea-ice concentration maps are based on running composites that are updated for each satellite swath. By doing this, features such as leads are resolved much better. Using this option, one can obtain sea-ice concentration data with a delay of less than 2 hours, and a frequency of up to 8 times a day depending on the location.
